What Makes “the Hardest Mile in Golf” So Challenging?

The Golf Club at Lansdowne is renowned for exceptional offerings, exclusively reserved for use by our club members and resort guests. In addition to the largest practice facilities in the area, a 43,000-square-foot clubhouse and highly respected Golf Academy, a player can choose from our one 9-hole and two 18-hole meticulously tended championship courses to tee up the round of their life.

Of course, for a true challenge on the links, you’ll want to reserve a tee time on our Greg Norman Course which plays host to what the legendary designer himself dubbed “the hardest mile in golf.” And, if you want to outscore the rest of your foursome on this stretch of the course (holes 6, 7, 8 and 9 measuring exactly one mile in length), you’ll read on for our golf pros’ hole-by-hole tips to tackle the Great White Shark’s challenge.

Hole 6 | Par 4

The Challenge: #6 is a long, straightforward hole with bunkers left and water right and short of the green

Top Tip: Try to place your tee shot down the left center of the fairway, a miss right into the water will incur a penalty shot and a left miss will place you in a fairway bunker where you will still have a shot to hit the green in regulation.

Hole 7 | Par 4

The Challenge: #7 is a very difficult hole with water down the entire right side of the fairway and green.

Top Tip: Again, try to place your tee shot down the left center of the fairway to avoid the water. When approaching the green, aim for the left center of the green to avoid the water.

Hole 8 | Par 5

The Challenge: #8 is extremely long straight hole at 663 yards. To make it even more difficult, the green is raised and very long and narrow.

Top Tip: #8 requires a long straight tee shot and another long straight second shot to leave yourself in position to have a middle to short iron into the very narrow green.

Hole 9 | Par 3

The Challenge: #9 is a par 3 with a 235-yard forced carry over water.

Top Tip: When playing #9, take a bit more club than is needed, the green is very large and there is plenty of room if you go long but no margin of error if you are short.

Armed with these pro tips, you can take some bite out of “the hardest mile in golf.” Just remember – access to all three of our courses is reserved exclusively for club members and resort guests. The best way to bundle your play with a stay is to take advantage of our generous golf packages, offered all year-round.
